(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 06.18.2024).- A new session of the Council of Cardinals was held at Casa Santa Marta on June 17 and 18. The meeting, presided over by Pope Francis, included the participation of the Council members and its Secretary.

The discussions on June 17 focused on the role of women in the Church, enriched by the insights of three distinguished women. The session began with an introduction from Sister Linda Pocher, followed by contributions from Valentina Rotondi, a professor at SUPSI in Lugano and a researcher at the University of Oxford and the University of Milan-Bicocca, and Donata Horak, a professor of Canon Law at the Alberoni Theological Institute in Piacenza, affiliated with the Pontifical University Angelicum.

Professor Rotondi presented a perspective on the economy as care and good management within the context of intergenerational relationships. Donata Horak addressed various dichotomies such as justice and mercy, consultative power versus deliberative power, hierarchical principles versus ecclesiology of communion, and the tension between democratization and monarchical models within a broader reflection on Canon Law.

Throughout the day, the Cardinals engaged in discussions about the topics raised by the speakers.

On June 18, the meeting continued with reports from Cardinal O’Malley on the progress and perspectives of the Commission for the Protection of Minors in safeguarding practices, and from Cardinal Gracias, who delved into the activities and operational methods of the Episcopal Conferences. The session also provided a platform to address issues from different regions represented by the Council members, with a particular focus on current global conflicts.

The next Council meeting is scheduled for December 2024.
