ZENIT News / Rome, 27.08.2024).- In a new verbal attack, dictator Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua, attacked the Vatican, saying it’s part of a “fascist conglomerate,” with ambitions of global domination. Ortega accused the Holy See of being an accomplice of the Nazi regime in Germany, and of fascists in Spain and Italy during the last century.

He made these statements during a virtual meeting of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), a political and economic coalition, which brings together ten countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, including Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia. The majority of ALBA’s Member States are headed by leftist Governments, many of which are critical of the United States.

Ortega, a leader that follows the roots of leftist Sandinismo in Nicaragua, didn’t limit his accusations, stating that the Vatican acts as an ally of the United States, which he considers a political enemy. According to the Nicaraguan President, the Catholici Church is used as a tool in the political disputes that Washington has with several countries of the Continent.

Pope Francis, who in the past has expressed concern over the situation in Nicaragua, referred again to the suffering of the Church in that Central American country, during the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, August 25. He expressed his solidarity with the Nicaraguan people, which, he said, is going through a “time of trial,” and prayed for divine protection for the Church in that country.
