Pope Appoints New “Major” for His Army: The Swiss Guards

As head of security will assume responsibility for service deployment, operations, headquarters and operations planning.

(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 03.26.2023).- Although it was made known a couple of weeks later, on March 7, 2023, Pope Francis appointed Lieutenant Dominik Tännler new Major of the Pontifical Swiss Guard.

Tännler was born on February 7, 1976, in the canton of Zurich. He is originally from the municipality of Hasliberg (BE). He entered the Pontifical Swiss Guard on February 2, 1998. On October 1, 2000 he was promoted to Vice Corporal and then, successively :

  • Corporal on November 1, 2004
  • Sargeant on March 20, 2014 and
  • Lieutenant on December 1, 2020.

As Lieutenant, he was responsible for the direction of the third team. 

As Major, as Head of Security, he will assume the responsibility of the deployment of services, of operations, of the general headquarters and of the planning of operations.
