The Vatican and Peace in Ukraine: Pope Francis Sends Cardinal Zuppi to Washington

The visit takes place in the context of the mission to promote peace in Ukraine and support initiatives in the humanitarian field to alleviate the suffering of the most affected and fragile people, especially children.

(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 07.17.2023).- In the context of Pope Francis’ Peace Mission for Ukraine, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, will go to the U.S. capital from July 17 to 19 to continue his peace endeavour, after his visits to Ukraine (in early June of 2023) and Russia (in late June of this year).

A note from the Holy See Press Office states that the “visit takes place in the context  of the mission to promote peace in Ukraine and intends to exchange ideas and opinions on the current tragic situation and support initiatives in the humanitarian realm, to alleviate the suffering of the most affected and fragile people, especially the children. 

Cardinal Zuppi will be accompanied on this visit by an Official of the Secretariat of State.
