(ZENIT News / Lisbon, 15.08.2023).- Cardinal Manuel Clemente, Archbishop of Lisbon, “requested not to assign his name to the pedestrian bridge for bicycles over the Trancão river. This is what is stated in an official press release published on the Patriarchate’s Website, where it is added that, although the Cardinal is grateful for the attention of Lisbon’s City Hall, “he does not want in any way that the attribution be a motive for division, or that anyone feel offended. The Word Youth Day intended to be, on the contrary, an opportunity for all of us to meet again , in favour of a more just and solidary society.”
A few days ago, Lisbon’s City Hall wished to pay homage to its Archbishop, on the occasion of both his 75 years of age as well as in appreciation for the World Youth Day. Soon two initiatives appeared on the Web: one in favour and another against.
The pedestrian bridge is located in the Park where the Pope’s Vigil with Young People took place as well as the closing Mass. The bridge measures 560 meters and is also the point of union between two municipalities: Lisbon and Loures.
