(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 06.05.2024).- In a significant announcement, Pope Francis revealed plans to publish an apostolic exhortation focused on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This development, initially hinted at by Monsignor Luis Arguello, President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, on May 31, was further elaborated by the Pope during the general audience on Wednesday, June 5.

«We are journeying through this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart,» Pope Francis remarked, emphasizing the spiritual significance of this period. He noted that December 27 of the previous year marked the 350th anniversary of the first apparition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. This milestone initiated a series of celebrations set to conclude on June 27 of the following year.

In his address, the Pope confirmed the forthcoming document: “I am pleased to be preparing a text that will incorporate the valuable reflections from previous magisterial teachings and a long history rooted in the Holy Scriptures. This will re-present to the entire Church the profound spiritual beauty of this devotion.”

Pope Francis underscored the contemporary relevance of the Sacred Heart devotion. «I believe that meditating on various aspects of the Lord’s love will greatly benefit us, shedding light on the path of ecclesial renewal. It also holds significant meaning for a world that seems to have lost its heart,» he stated. He urged the faithful to support him with their prayers during the preparation of this document, which is slated for release in September.

The Pope’s initiative aims to rejuvenate a long-standing tradition within the Church, fostering spiritual growth and renewal. By drawing on the rich legacy of the Sacred Heart devotion, Pope Francis seeks to inspire the faithful and offer a message of hope and love to a world in need.
