Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) stated that a new 110 page update to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services mandate would require “time for analysis. “
The Health and Human Services (HHS) federal mandate requires employers of religious institutions to be legally required to pay for insurance that provides abortion-inducing drugs, contraception, and sterilization procedures to employees.
Employers were to comply to the ruling by August 1st, 2013 but the department has given a five month extension for entities to implement the mandate, moving the date to January 1, 2014. . Cardinal Dolan expressed his appreciation for the extension.
«We have received and started to review the 110-page final rule on the HHS mandate,» Cardinal Dolan said.
«We appreciate the extension of the effective date by five months, which is readily apparent in the rule. The remainder of the rule is long and complex. It will require more careful analysis. We will provide a fuller statement when that analysis is complete.»
