The mentality that women are objects to be used at the disposal of men leads to various forms of violence and exploitation of women and even young girls. It needs to be stopped in its tracks.
Sadly, in today’s culture, pornography is often viewed as a harmless pastime. Yet, studies have shown that habitual viewers of “soft porn” eventually move on to more degrading and violent forms of pornography to satisfy their addiction. They become numb to the abuses taking place before them. Viewers of pornography need to come to terms with the fact that by supporting the industry, they are perpetuating further violence.
In the recent ZENIT article, pyschotherapist Peter Kleponis is asked, “What virtues are particularly helpful with pornography?” He responds, “The virtues that are helpful in resolving selfishness are generous self-giving to one’s spouse and to children, friendship with one’s spouse, self-denial, gratitude, responsibility, temperance, humility and much greater love for one’s spouse and for the Lord that would motivate a person not to inflict further hurt and pain.”
Did he not just describe St. Joseph?
I firmly believe that by bringing back the example of St. Joseph and by praying for his intercession, the Church can do much to combat pornography and other forms of violence against women.
