Number of Elector-Cardinals Diminishing

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 7, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The number of cardinals who could participate in a conclave to elect a future Pope is shrinking, as several near their 80th birthday.

Cardinal Virgilio Noè, patriarch of St. Peter´s Basilica and the Holy Father´s vicar general for Vatican City, turns 80 on March 30. On that day, there will be 128 elector cardinals left, among the 178 overall.

Other cardinals quickly follow suit: Dino Monduzzi turns 80 on April 2. Bernardin Gantin, dean of the College of Cardinals, hits the milestone on May 8, as does Stephen Kim. Pio Laghi, protodeacon cardinal, turns 80 on May 21.

Cardinals Gilberto Agustoni and Lorenzo Antonetti celebrate their 80th birthday on July 26 and July 31, respectively. Then, Luis Aponte Martínez turns 80 on Aug. 4; Rosalío Castillo Lara on Sept. 4; and Roger Etchegaray on Sept. 25.
