Theologians' Videoconference to Focus on Priesthood

ROME, JUNE 26, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican Congregation for Clergy will sponsor a videoconference on the priesthood this Friday, with the participation of theologians from around the world.

Their talks, which may be followed live or recorded on Internet, will address such topics as the relation between the priest and the Eucharist; celibacy; the priest’s collaboration with the laity; and his relation with the bishop.

Following an introduction by Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, prefect of the Vatican congregation, Monsignor Bruno Forte, of the International Theological Commission, will touch on the priesthood in the light of John Paul II’s encyclical «Ecclesia de Eucharistia.»

Alfonso Carrasco Rouco, dean of the St. Damasus Faculty of Theology of Madrid, will speak on priestly celibacy, while Stuart Bate of Johannesburg will discuss «Priestly Identity and Lifestyle.»

Father Paolo Scarafoni, rector of the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical Athenaeum, will speak on the priesthood and the Sacred Heart.

Bishop Rino Fisichella, rector of the Lateran University, will close out the dozen talks with an address on «The Relation Between Bishops and Priests.»

The videoconference starts at midday, Rome time, and can be followed at www.clerus.org. The original texts delivered by the theologians will be posted later on the same Web page.
