Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia as the new president of the Pontifical Academy for Life. He succeeds 78-year-old Bishop Ignacio Carrasco de Paula.
Archbishop Paglia had previously served as president of the Pontifical Council for the Family; that council has now been merged into the new Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life. Bishop Kevin Farrell has been named the prefect of the new dicastery.
The Pope also appointed Archbishop Paglia as Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, and Msgr. Pierangelo Sequeri as its new president.
Msgr. Sequeri was previously Dean of the Theology Faculty of Northern Italy in Milan.
