Robinson visited Beijing from Feb. 24-26 to participate in a seminar on crime. Her visit was an opportunity to call for the abolition of the «re-education through labor» system used to incarcerate dissidents and Falun Gong followers, the international agency Fides reported.
The Beijing regime also has launched a campaign of repression against Christians who do not wish to adhere to the Chinese Patriotic Association, the state-approved church. The measures include the imprisonment of several bishops and priests.
On Feb. 28, China ratified the U.N. Convention on Social Affairs and Workers´ Rights, but it has not committed itself to guarantee the organization of independent labor unions and respect for other human rights.
