Pope Francis has made an appeal for protecting freedom of conscience.

Toward the end of his General Audience this morning, June 17, 2020, in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, he stressed this.

The Pope’s General Audience continues to be held privately and streamed from his Apostolic Library, in order to protect against COVID19 contagion.

The Pontiff began recalling today, June 17, 2020, marks the “Day of Conscience”, inspired by the witness of the Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who around 80 years ago decided to follow the voice of his conscience and saved the lives of thousands of Jews and other persecuted peoples.

“May freedom of conscience be respected always and everywhere, and may every Christian give the example of the consistency of an upright conscience
enlightened by the Word of God,” he concluded.
