Pope Francis appointed Professor Antonella Sciarrone Alibrandi, Pro-Vicar Rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Italy, as a Member of the Steering Committee of the Financial Information Authority (FIA), reported the Holy See Press Office on June 12, 2020.
The appointment implies a new step of the Argentine Pontiff towards transparency in the entity, which is in charge of revising the Holy See’s finances and the fight against money laundering. In fact, last Friday, June 5, broker Gianluigi Torzi was arrested in the Vatican, who acted as an intermediary in returning realty property in London to the Secretariat of State.
Recently, the Holy Father renewed the management positions of the Vatican entity. On April 15, 2020, Giuseppe Schlitzer took over from FIA’s former Director, Dr. Tommaso Di Ruzza, and, in turn, Dr Federico Antellini Russo was appointed Vice-Director. In November of 2019, Carmelo Barbagallo was appointed the new President of the Financial Information Authority.
Last January 23, 2020, the Holy See reported that the Financial Information Authority was readmitted to the international information circuit of the Egmont Group, an international organization that groups international units of Financial Intelligence worldwide, especially against money laundering.
