n Memorial Day, we remember and honor those brave patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend America and its people.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, and the triumph of the Allied forces.  As we commemorate this remarkable achievement, we must always remember the more than 400,000 Americans who gave their lives to liberate the world from tyranny.  All Americans have an obligation to live up to their example.  As President Truman said in his address to the nation on September 1, 1945:  “It is our responsibility — ours the living — to see to it that this victory shall be a monument worthy of the dead who died to win it.”

May God bless our fallen heroes and may God bless the United States of America.

Callista L. Gingrich
U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See
