Theme Picked for Communications Day '06

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 29, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI has chosen as the theme for World Communications Day 2006 “The Media: A Network for Communication, Communion and Cooperation.”

“This first theme chosen by our Holy Father,” said Archbishop John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, “[…] underlines his own appreciation of the ability of the communications media not only to make known needed information but also to promote fruitful cooperation.”

World Communications Day is observed in most countries on the Sunday before Pentecost, which would be May 28 next year.

The announcement of the theme is customarily made on Sept. 29, the feast of the Archangels Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. Archangel Michael has been designated patron of those who work in radio.

The Holy Father’s message for World Communications Day is traditionally published in conjunction with the memorial of St. Francis de Sales, patron of writers, Jan. 24.
