In a statement on the announced march of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), from Chiapas to Mexico City, the Mexican bishops´ conference said the movement must realize that "the ideas of one group cannot be imposed on an entire nation, even if they are very respectable."

This means that, once the Zapatistas have been heard by government officials, they must "accept the resulting law" that legislators decide on, the bishops said in the document published today.

The bishops ask Congress to "listen attentively" to the EZLN delegation, as part of the dialogue to "deactivate the war" which has been taking place in the southern state of Chiapas since January 1994.
