«Pope John Paul II» is one of his best-known books, and the most popular papal biography after George Weigel´s «Witness To Hope.»
Szulc was an international news reporter for the New York Times from 1953 to 1972. On April 7, 1961, he reported from Miami on the preparations for an invasion of Cuba, 10 days before exiled Castro opponents invaded at the Bay of Pigs.
The article was censured by the newspaper´s editorial board to avoid endangering «national security,» a decision that caused much controversy.
After leaving the newspaper, Polish-born Szulc wrote 20 books, including a biography on Fidel Castro.
