According to a Turkish diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, Archbishop Luigi Conti, the apostolic nuncio in Ankara, was called to a recent meeting, during which the government expressed its «consternation.»

On Sept. 27, in a joint declaration, John Paul II and Armenian Catholicos Karekin II condemned the «genocide» in which 1.5 million Armenians were killed under the Ottoman Empire.

Turkey says that the number of dead was not so high, and that the victims were the casualties of war at that time.
