Pope Asks Help for World´s 15 Million Refugees

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 19, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II reminded the faithful that World Refugee Day will be observed Thursday.

At the end of today´s general audience, the Pope referred to the objectives of the U.N.-promoted Refugee Day: “to call attention to the 15 million human beings obliged to cross the borders of their countries to flee from persecution or violation of their fundamental rights.”

He urged “that the leaders of nations listen to the cry that rises from such a tragic exodus of individuals and families and that they do what is necessary to offer an adequate response to the dramatic problems of these brothers and sisters of ours.”
