Nigerian Man Condemned to Death for Adultery

KANO, Nigeria, JUNE 28, 2002 (Zenit.org).- For the first time, a Nigerian Muslim court has condemned a man to death by stoning for adultery, judicial sources quoted by Agence France-Presse said.

Yunusa Rafin Chiyawa appeared before the court of the northern state of Bauchi after having run away with his neighbor’s pregnant wife and lived with her for two weeks.

Two women have been condemned to stoning for adultery since Islamic law took effect in 1999 in several states of northern Nigeria. The sentence of one of them was overturned by a court of appeals; the other awaits final sentencing.
