The religious in the Crisis Center of the Catholic Diocese of Ambon reported that dozens of members of the extremist Muslim group Laskar Jihad are about to leave the island for Java.

Also, on June 30, residents of the Christian neighborhood of Kudamati handed in munitions and weapons to the military.

Nearly 9,000 people have been killed since 1999 and thousands more left homeless in sectarian violence.

An agreement was signed in Sulawesi last February for the pacification of the two communities. Although it has been violated on several occasions, it is not under discussion.
