The presidents of the bishops’ conferences opened their three-day meeting here with a Mass in Santo Domingo’s cathedral, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

«We all know that the future of the world and of the Church depends on the family, and that the family is threatened in our time and needs help,» the cardinal said during the homily.

The meeting is being held at the initiative of the Latin American bishops’ council (CELAM) and the Pontifical Council for the Family. The meeting ends Wednesday.
