The cardinal assumed this role in his capacity as first vice president of CELAM, a post he has held since May 1999, sources of the Chilean episcopate reported.

Cardinal Errázuriz rushed to Bogota on Tuesday, where CELAM is headquartered. He will remain at least three days in the Colombian capital, carrying out the organization’s most urgent tasks. The Archdiocese of Santiago has appealed for prayers to «the Lord of Life for the speedy release of Monsignor Jorge Enrique Jiménez, safe and sound.»
