Argentina Gets Another Donation from Pope

BUENOS AIRES, DEC. 11, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II donated $100,000 to Caritas-Argentina to help this beleaguered nation — and to prompt others to pitch in with help.

The news was made known in a letter signed by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, sent to Archbishop Eduardo Vicente Mirás of Rosario, president of the Argentine episcopal conference.

Last February, the Pope gave a similar sum and encouraged the recipients to promote an attitude of solidarity, generosity and responsibility «in all citizens, which will safeguard the need for social concord and the satisfaction of the urgent needs of the whole population.»

Levels of poverty and malnutrition have escalated in recent months given the food and health emergency in the country. Caritas-Argentina has redoubled its efforts for immediate assistance.

Its objective is to increase to 2 million the number of people the organization cares for daily. It relies on the help of 25,000 volunteers to serve in dining rooms, nurseries and other places in the distribution of food bags, medication and clothes.
