Father Gerard Tronche of the Missionaries of Africa, and Ludovico Massimo Lancellotti left for Auckland, New Zealand, today to offer their services in the Louis Vuitton Cup, which begins next week. It is regarded as the first phase before the challenge of the America’s Cup.

Their mission takes place following a Nov. 22 statement by the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers, which announced the start of a research project for the pastoral care of participants in regattas.

The council said that the research revealed that participants in sailing regattas and yachtsmen of small vessels are much more numerous than was first thought. Moreover, few yachtsmen knew of the Stella Maris Centers of the Apostleship of the Sea.

The council also said that yachtsmen and managers of regattas were pleased to hear about the Catholic Church’s new interest in the yachting community.
