Pope Sends Condolences for Victims of Subway Arson

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 19, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II expressed his sympathy to the relatives of the more than 120 people who died in a fire Tuesday in the subway of Daegu, South Korea.

The telegram, sent by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican Secretary of State, says: “Saddened by the news of the great loss of life In the arson attack on a subway train in Daegu, the Holy Father asks” Bishop Paul Ri Moun-Hi of Daegu, “to convey his heartfelt condolences to the civil authorities and the afflicted families.”

The papal message concludes with an assurance of prayers “for the eternal repose of the victims and invokes God’s gift of strength and comfort upon those who are in mourning.”
