Joliet Auxiliary Steps Down for Health

WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 6, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop James E. Fitzgerald of Joliet, Illinois, the Vatican press office announced.

The 64-year-old bishop stepped down because of failing health from Parkinson’s disease, the Chicago Tribune quoted diocesan officials saying.

He had been appointed auxiliary last year. He was ordained a priest of the Joliet Diocese in May 1964.

He was diagnosed with the neurological disease in December and has not been working for some time.
