The 64-year-old bishop stepped down because of failing health from Parkinson’s disease, the Chicago Tribune quoted diocesan officials saying.
He had been appointed auxiliary last year. He was ordained a priest of the Joliet Diocese in May 1964.
He was diagnosed with the neurological disease in December and has not been working for some time.
