Calling same-sex marriage a threat to the American family already under siege because of divorce, he added: «The weakening of the institution of marriage has already had too high a social cost.»

Archbishop O’Malley received a standing ovation Thursday by his audience of 100 religious leaders at a conference organized by the Massachusetts Family Institute.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is now considering whether to grant marriage licenses to homosexual couples.
