Successor Named in Portland, Maine

PORTLAND, Maine, FEB. 10, 2004 (ZENIT.org).- John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Bishop Joseph Gerry, 75, of Portland and appointed Auxiliary Bishop Richard Malone of Boston as his successor.

The Pope also accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop George Wirz, 75, of Madison, Wisconsin, the Vatican press office announced today. He was appointed auxiliary in December 1977.

Richard Malone, 57, was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He attended St. John’s Seminary School of Theology in Brighton, Boston University, and the Weston Jesuit School of Theology. Ordained a priest of the Boston Archdiocese in May 1972, he was appointed auxiliary of Boston in January 2000.

The Portland Diocese comprises the state of Maine. It has a Catholic population of about 218,000 in a total population of about 1.3 million.
