2 Auxiliaries Retire From Military Archdiocese

WASHINGTON, D.C., SEPT. 15, 2004 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has accepted the resignations of auxiliary bishops Francis Roque, 75, and Joseph Madera, 76, of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA.

Francis X. Roque was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Providence, in 1953. He was named auxiliary bishop of Military Services in March 1983.

Joseph J. Madera was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended the House of Studies for Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in Coyoacan, Mexico, and ordained a priest in 1957.

He was appointed coadjutor bishop of Fresno, California, in November 1979, and became bishop of the diocese in the June 1980. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Military Services in May 1991.
