After praying the midday Angelus with the crowds gathered today in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope said that the purpose of the day was to “maintain the authentic values of sports activity.”

“In particular, this year underlines the relationship between sports and nature, according to the theme chosen by the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization for this World Day of the Environment,” the Holy Father added.

“I hope that sports, practiced at all levels in a healthy and harmonious way, will foster fraternity and solidarity between persons and respect and appreciation of the natural environment,” said the Pope.
