Supreme Knight Named to Works of Religion Institute

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 23, 2009 ( The Commission of Cardinals, which oversees the activities of the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), has renewed the membership of the Board of Superintendence of the Institute.

In a communiqué sent today, the institute, chaired by Benedict XVI’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, named among the new members Carl Anderson, the supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, and a regular columnist for ZENIT.

Others named are Giovanni De Censi, president of the Credito Valtellinese; Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, president of the Santander Consumer Bank; Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz of Germany; and Manuel Soto Serrano of Spain.

The appointments were made after accepting the resignations presented by Angelo Caloia, president of the Board of Superintendence, and the other members of the board.

The communiqué also noted that the board appointed Ettore Gotti Tedeschi as the new president of the Board of Superintendence and Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz as vice president.

The Commission of Cardinals extended its “best wishes” to the new board, as well as its gratitude to Monsignor Piero Pioppo, prelate of the Institute; Paolo Cipriani, director general; and Massimo Tulli, vice director general.
