VATICAN CITY, JAN. 16, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is recalling in prayer the victims of floods in Australia, Brazil, the Philippines and Sri Lanka

Today after praying the midday Angelus together with those gathered in St. Peter's Square, the Pope took a few moments to remember these victims in various countries.

He stated, "I would like to assure a special remembrance in prayer the people of Australia, Brazil, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, who have recently been devastated by floods."

At least 626 lives have been lost in the Brazilian floods and mudslides alone, which began Tuesday in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The Holy Father said, "May the Lord receive the souls of the dead, give strength to the evacuees and help those who are working to alleviate the suffering and grief."
