Archbishop Smith succeeds Bishop Pierre Morissette who ended his term as president today, as the bishops’ five-day plenary assembly drew to a close.

Richard Smith was born in Halifax and ordained a priest for that archdiocese. He was named bishop of Pembroke in 2002, and appointed archbishop of Edmonton by Benedict XVI in 2007. He has been CCCB vice president since 2009. He will celebrate his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination on May 12, 2012.

The incoming CCCB executive will also include two co-treasurers: from the English sector, Bishop Douglas Crosby of Hamilton, and from the French sector Bishop Lionel Gendron of Saint-Jean-Longueuil. This will be Bishop Crosby’s second term as co-treasurer and Bishop Gendron’s first.
