VATICAN CITY, FEB. 24, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI assured his closeness to the relatives of the victims and the wounded from a train wreck that occurred Wednesday in Buenos Aires.

The Pope’s message was published by Vatican Radio, which added that in a telegram signed by the Holy Father’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, he expressed his condolences to Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires.

The cause of the tragedy is not clear but it is suspected that the train’s braking system failed. The engine crashed into the end of the platform, causing the cars behind it to smash into each other.

The body of the 51st victim was only found today; all passengers have now been accounted for.
