WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 5, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Donald Wuerl has just recently gone online and set up a blog. In his inaugural post on Feb. 26, Washington D.C.’s archbishop explained that while for many years he has written and appeared on television this is his first blog.
“What I would like to do in this blog is to talk about our Catholic faith, what it teaches, why it is so important, certainly to me, and why, I hope, it would be important to you,” he declared.
He chose the blog’s title, “Seek First the Kingdom,” because, he explained, it stems from the challenge of Jesus to his disciples that in the midst of daily life: “we would keep our hearts clearly focused on something that is not as visible as the creation around us, but is every bit as real – the presence of God in our lives.”
He expressed the hope that in the future he would be able to share the contribution that the Catholic faith brings to the world around us.
“My hope is that in this digital world we will have an opportunity, as Pope Benedict XVI once said, ‘to meet each other beyond the confines of space’ in a way that we might create an entirely new world of potential friendships, ’” he concluded.
Three other American cardinals already have blogs. Cardinal Seán O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., of Boston, was a pioneer in espiscopal blogging, having inaugurated his back in September 2006.
Then, at the end of 2009, the now retired archbishop of Los Angles, Cardinal Roger Mahony, set up his blog and he continues to post regularly.
From New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan has his blog, titled: “The Gospel in the Digital Age.” In recent times he has used this to defend religious liberty in his criticism of the health insurance regulations regarding coverage of contraception.
Some American bishops also have blogs. Two of them are in Texas. Bishop Kevin Farrell blogs from his diocese of Dallas, and for over a year now Bishop Kevin W. Vann, of the diocese of Fort Worth has his own blog.
