VATICAN CITY, OCT. 26, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Pope Benedict XVI received in audience Demetris Christofias, president of the Republic of Cyprus at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. Shortly after, President Christofias met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
In a communique released by the Holy See, the discussions took place in a «cordial atmosphere» while emphasizing on the good relations that exist between the Holy See and the Republic of Cyprus. «Consideration was also given to issues of mutual interest, in particular the importance of dialogue and of respect for human rights, including the right to religious freedom,» the statement read.
The representatives of the Holy See and the president of Cyprus also discussed the several situations occurring in Europe. Currently, the Republic of Cyprus holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union. The meeting concluded with discussions on existing conflicts in the Middle East. «The hope was expressed that initiatives for dialogue and peace between the sides in conflict in the Middle East would achieve a positive outcome with the contribution of the international community,» the communique stated.
