Benedict XVI today concluded his weekly general audience with an appeal for aid for Indonesia, where flooding this month has devastated the capital.

The Pope said he was "following with concern" the news of the Jakarta floods, which have caused several deaths, displaced thousands of people, and damaged the city extensively.

"I wish to express my closeness to the people affected by this natural disaster, assuring you of my prayers and encouraging solidarity so that no one may lack the required help," the Holy Father said.
