President Denis Sassou N'Guesso Meets with Pope Francis

Discuss Humanitarian and Educational Assistance; Concern for Rise of Fundamentalism

Pope Francis met with President Denis Sassou N’Guesso of the Republic of Congo this morning at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

Among the topics discussed were the positive contributions of the Catholic Church in the Congo, particularly in the field of education. According to a press release by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father and the Congolese President “renewed their will to strengthen bilateral cooperation”.

Also discussed were several areas affecting Central Africa, among them, humanitarian assistance for refugees and security in the region. Both expressed “concern for the rise of tensions due to fundamentalism.”

Shortly after the meeting, President N’Guesso met with Archbishop Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State. (J.A.E.)
