Music Box Films will release of THE APPARITION starting September 7 in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, then expanding nationwide throughout September.
“THE APPARITION ventures into signs from God and the secret canonical committees that investigates apparitions,” said director and screenwriter Xavier Giannoli. “I certainly didn’t want to make people believe in apparitions — far from it. But I also wanted to believe in this young visionary’s profound sincerity, despite the legitimate doubt one may have on the truth of what she claims to have seen. I find this self-sacrifice moving and poetic, and I have deep respect for that.”
“THE APPARITION is a gripping and sobering look at the Catholic Church’s process of investigation and validation of an alleged supernatural occurrence and the emotions, complications and perils surrounding such an event,” said Michael O’Neill, host of “The Miracle Hunter” on Relevant Radio and “They Might Be Saints” on EWTN, author of “Exploring the Miraculous” and expert on Marian apparitions.
THE APPARITION stars Vincent Lindon (THE MEASURE OF A MAN), Patrick d’Assumçao (STRANGER BY THE LAKE), and Galatéa Bellugi (KEEPER).
In THE APPARITION, Jacques Mayano (Lindon), a skeptical journalist, is recruited by the Vatican to take part in a canonical committee investigating a possible apparition of the Blessed Mother to young novitiate Anna (Bellugi) in a remote French village. Confronted with opposing views from clergy members and skeptics, Jacques gradually uncovers the hidden motivations and pressures at work, and finds his belief system profoundly shaken.
THE APPARITION is distributed by Music Box Films, in association with Memento Films International, Cofinova 14, La Banque Postale Image 10, Cinemage 12, Manon 7, Canal+, and France Télévisions.
Filmed in France, THE APPARITION is produced by Memento Films and was released in France in February 2018.
“Xavier Giannoli’s film moves slowly but with considerable power as it explores faith, doubt, mass hysteria and the desperate human need for supernatural reassurance,” said the Irish Independent in its review. “And in this film, it’s the atheists you pity.”
THE APPARITION premieres in select markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco on September 7, 2018, then expands nationwide throughout September.
