“Our country is constantly faced with various trials and difficulties, there are few job and education opportunities, high insecurity, including the uncertainty and expectations that come with it and a new government”, said the Mexican Bishops in their message at the beginning of the year, but they also recognize that “our people want the Church to be a close companion along the way,” and express their commitment to building a “common Home.”
“A reality fraught with insecurity and excessively increasing violence forces our people to live in fear, pain, and insecurity,” said the Bishops in their message published on January 8, 2019, and reported January 11 by Fides News Agency. “The pilgrim Church in Mexico is committed to contributing to the common good with all its resources: to make progress in overcoming violence and, in cooperation with civil society, the government and various organizations, through their teaching, pastoral care and creating spaces for encounters, dialogue, and peace.”
The Bishops then recalled that a working group on the protection of minors was launched at the General Assembly last November and welcome the invitation of the Holy Father to the presidents of the Episcopal Conferences for a meeting in Rome on this subject.
“Today, more than ever, we are disturbed by the shocking outcry of migrants,” the Bishops continued. “In faithfulness to the faith in Jesus Christ, we must not ignore the suffering of those who seek better living conditions and cross borders in search of work not only looking for the welfare of their families but also contributing to the common good.”
The Bishops concluded by recalling that climate change is a global problem, as Pope Francis emphasizes in the encyclical Laudato Sì and “one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today.” That is why they call on the country to be “a pioneer in preserving our common home.”
