The Holy Father Francis has appointed as bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina, Italy, Bishop Mauro Parmeggiani, bishop of Tivoli and currently apostolic administrator of Palestrina, uniting in persona Episcopi the dioceses of Tivoli and Palestrina.
Bishop Parmeggiani was born on July 5, 1961, in Reggio Emilia, in the province of the same name, diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the Interdiocesan Theological Studium of Reggio Emilia. He was ordained a priest on October 18, 1985, for the diocese of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla. He was then incardinated in the diocese of Rome on November 25, 1996.
He has served as diocesan deputy assistant for Italian Catholic Action of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla for the youth sector, and teacher of religion at the “L. Nobili” Technical Industrial Institute of Reggio Emilia (1985 to 1986). He was then special secretary to His Eminence Cardinal Ruini, first as study assistant of the General Secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference (1986 to 1991), and then at the Vicariate of Rome (1991 to 2003). From 1993 to 2008 he was director of Youth Pastoral Service of the Vicariate of Rome. On October 17, 2003, he became prelate secretary of the Vicariate of Rome and on the following 1 November, delegate of the cardinal vicar for the Consulta of Lay Aggregations.
He has also served as a member of the Roman committee for the preparation of the Great Jubilee of 2000 and of the national committee for the preparation and celebration of World Youth Day 2000, head of the Youth Pastoral Section of the Commission for the Family and Life of the Lazio Episcopal Conference. He has also been a member of the Management Board of the Roman opera for the Preservation of Faith and for the Provision of New Churches in Rome and president of the “Msgr. Placido Nicotra” Foundation.
On July 3, 2008, he was appointed as bishop of Tivoli and received episcopal ordination the following 20 September.
Within the episcopal conference of Lazio, he has been responsible for the Regional Commission for the Family, Life, and Youth since 2010. Since 2012, by appointment of the Permanent Episcopal Council of the Italian Episcopal Conference, he has served as ecclesiastical assistant of the Confederation of Fraternities of the dioceses of Italy.
On July 31, 2017, he was appointed as apostolic administrator of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina.
