(ZENIT News / Lisbon, 02.08.2023).- On his arrival at Lisbon’s Figo Maduro Air Base, the Holy Father Francis was welcomed by the President of the Republic of Portugal, D. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Two children, dressed in traditional costumes, offered the Pope flowers.
Then, after the Guard of Honour and greeting to the Delegations, the Pope and the President went to the Air Base’s VIP Lounge, where the Delegations were introduced and brief meeting took place.
After the meeting, Pope Francis went by car to the Main Entrance of the Belem National Palace for the Welcome Ceremony. On his arrival, he was received by the President of the Republic, D. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Then, after the playing of the hymns, the Guard of Honour and Honours to the Flags and the introduction of the respective Delegations, the Pope and President of the Republic went in separate cars to the Belem National Palace for the courtesy visit to the President of the Republic.
After the Official Photo, the Signing of the Book of Honour and the Blessing of those present from the terrace, the exchange of gifts took place in the Hall of Ambassadors, followed by a private meeting in the President’s Study.
At the end of the meeting, the Holy Father went by car to the Belem Cultural Center for the meeting with the Authorities, the Civil Society and the Diplomatic Corps.
