Church bombed in Ukraine, everything destroyed, but image of Virgin Mary remains intact

This is not the first incident of this kind that the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has experienced. Just over a year ago, another bomb struck the temple, but the structure was saved thanks to a fence that absorbed the explosive force.

(ZENIT News / Kherson, 02.27.2024).- In the midst of the chaos and devastation wrought by the war in Ukraine, a ray of hope shines in the city of Kherson, where an extraordinary event has left the community both shocked and grateful.

Since the beginning of Ash Wednesday, the city has been targeted by intense bombings, but it was on Saturday, February 17, when a projectile struck the grounds of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Despite the roar and damage caused by the blast, a miracle occurred: the statue of the Madonna, located on the premises, miraculously remained standing, untouched amidst the rubble. No one was injured.

The account of this astonishing event reaches us through Father Maksym Padlevskyi, who, despite the dangers, has chosen to remain by his community’s side in these difficult times. The bombing wreaked havoc in the area, but the church and its faithful image of the Virgin miraculously survived, despite the damage caused to the structure and windows.

Father Maksym shares with amazement how, despite the destruction in the city, the parish community remains united and perseverant. Although the bombings have forced many people to leave Kherson, some faithful continue to attend the church, even traversing long distances and facing dangers to be present at Sunday celebrations.

This is not the first incident of this kind that the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has experienced. Just over a year ago, another bomb struck the temple, but the structure was saved thanks to a fence that absorbed the explosive force. “The Lord always protects us,” Father Maksym comments, highlighting the faith and resilience of the community amidst adversity.

Despite the challenges and constant danger, faith and hope continue to illuminate the path of the inhabitants of Kherson. This miracle amidst war is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, the light of divine providence shines brightly.
