Ten years ago, on June 6, 2010, more than 250,000 believers, including Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko’s mother Marianna, his friends, and numerous representatives of the Polish world of work, participated in the beatification of the martyr of communism. This fact began the official cult of the “Solidarność” chaplain, whose relics are located in 61 countries around the world.
During ten years, the cult of Blessed Fr. Popiełuszko has been developing intensively, also outside of Poland. During that time, 990 churches, sanctuaries, or retreat houses asked for Popiełuszko’s relics. 448 relics are now in 61 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, South Korea, the Philippines, Israel, and the Vatican. His name was given to 219 streets and squares, including five outside Poland, in New York or Budapest.
The cult of Blessed Fr. Popiełuszko is also connected with numerous testimonies of graces obtained through his intercession. The Centre for Documentation of the Life and Cult of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko received 570 such testimonies. Twenty of those sent after 2010 are provided with medical documentation.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko’s beatification, in his Sanctuary in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Warsaw, in a special chapel, further relics related to the martyrdom of the martyr of communism will be displayed for the faithful. On October 19, 2019, on the 35th anniversary of his death, a cassock in which he died was made available in a special showcase, while since June 6, 2020, on the 10th anniversary of his beatification, the faithful are able to see for the first time the personal objects he had with him during his last journey: a cross, a rosary, a “Solidarność” badge, a summons for a court hearing or a badge with an eagle.
