To respond to the invitation of Pope Francis, who in the Encyclical “Brothers All” renews several times the necessity to prepare an adequate reception of migrants fleeing from wars, persecutions and natural disasters, the Sisters Servants of Divine Providence of Catania decided to offer Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Almonry, the use on loan of their building on via della Pisana, in Rome.
The building, called “Villa Serena,” will become a reception house for refugees, in particular, for single women, women with minors, families in a vulnerable state that arrive in Italy through the humanitarian corridors. The building will be able to house up to 60 people and its primary purpose will be to receive refugees in the first months after their arrival, to then accompany them in endeavors for autonomous work and lodging.
The reception house has been entrusted to Sant’Egidio Community, which, as is now known, since 2015 opened humanitarian corridors for refugees, from the Horn of Africa and the last from Greece, in particular from the Island of Lesbos. Up to now more than 2,600 people have been received and accompanied in the process of integration, among them a large number of minors.
