COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, JULY 8, 2001 (ZENIT.org–Fides).- The Catholic Church is among the voices calling for a government of national unity to save a struggling Sri Lanka.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga has lost the majority in Parliament since the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress withdrew its support. The country faces a political stall. In the meantime the economy is failing and inflation is rising. The army continues to attack rebels in the north.
During his Angelus address on July 1, John Paul II recalled the feast of Our Lady of Madhu, whose shrine in the north of the island even draws non-Christians.
