Pope Francis received President Evo Morales of Bolivia this morning at the Apostolic Palace. President Morales also met after the meeting with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.
According to a communique released by the Holy See, the Holy Father and Bolivian Head of State discussed various issues relating to the socio-economic and religious situation of the South American country, “such as the fight against social inequality and poverty.”
“Mention was then made of the decisive contribution of the Catholic Church in Bolivia in the fields of education, healthcare, support for families and welfare provision for children and the elderly,” the communique stated.
The Holy See also said that both discussed the importance of good relations between the Church and the State, particularly in matters of common interest for the good of the nation.
“Finally, the discussions turned to the international situation and, in particular, the promotion of peace in Syria and the Middle East,” the communique concluded.
