Monsignor Johannes Hendriks, 56, will assist Bishop Joseph Maria Punt, 65.
The Vatican announced Bishop-designate Hendriks’ appointment at the same time as the retirement of his predecessor, Auxiliary Bishop Johannes Gerardus Maria van Burgsteden, 75.
The Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam has about 474,000 Catholics in a population of 2.8 million. The faithful are served by just over 200 priests and 700 religious.
Johannes Hendriks was born in Leidschendam, Netherlands, in 1954 and ordained a priest in 1979. He obtained a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He is a consultor of the Congregation for the Clergy.
